Women’s Rights are Human Rights

March is Women’s History Month which celebrates the contributions of women to American

history. One very strong and impactful American woman was Eleanor Roosevelt who fought for

and helped shape the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) - the first document to ever

describe the rights and freedoms for every human being. Women’s rights are part of human

rights and include but are not only limited to

- the right to live free from violence and discrimination,

- to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health,

- to be educated,

- to own property,

- to vote,

- and to earn an equal wage.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was a milestone that led to many more human rights

movements, including the progression of women’s rights. March 8th is International Women’s

Day and celebrates the active participation, equality and development of women, and the

contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.” So

maybe one day this month you will feel inspired and remember one of Eleanor’s

famous quotes:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
