Britny's Law

On July 11, 2017, Senate Bill 600, also known as “Britny’s Law,” was signed by Gov. Roy Cooper. Previously, deaths involving domestic violence were tried as second-degree murder. This bill allows prosecutors to use a history of domestic violence as evidence of premeditation and therefore can seek first-degree murder charges. The passing “Britny’s Law” is a significant win for our North Carolina Community by keeping abusers incarcerated for longer periods of time.
